Burton SC Open 21-22 April 2012

Gorge brothers win from Boite/Toupet and Pinnell/Mitchell

Russ and Andy Short win the 2012 Inlands in a closely fought event

11 Boats racked up on the slipway of Burton Sailing Club on April 21st to compete for the 2012 Inland Championships. A dodgy forecast had kept some of the more regularly seen teams away but competition was still rife within what is becoming the most competitive fleet around!

Race one started in typically shifty conditions. With the breeze fluctuating between 10-15knots to… well, very little!!! Russ and Andy Short shot out in front leaving 2-11th place changing constantly. With no clear 2nd and 3rd place till the last lap where Jim Hunt and Norman Byrd squeezed ahead and enjoyed 2nd place with locals Stuart Turnbull and Jason Lunn taking 3rd from Charlie Walters and Dougal Cram in 4th; and just scraping ahead to beat the boys in their second boat (8306 Ben Iliffe and Carl Gibbon), Neil Rabbitts and Adam Kenney in 5th.

Race two got underway in very similar conditions to race one and also ended in very similar conditions to race one! Russ and Andy Short showed the fleet how to do this inland sailing lark and headed off into 1st place, followed by Charlie and Dougal, Stuart and Jason and Jim and Norman. The top 4 positions must have changed half a dozen times before the end of the race across a simple windward/leeward course. The Shorts dominated to take 1st place, Charlie and Dougal 2nd and a consistant Stuart and Jason came in 3rd. Jim and Norman doubling their points from race one with 4th.

Race three saw the wind pick up and steady (a joyous occasion for those falling foul to the big shifts)! Charlie and Dougal came up trumps and took 1st place, Stuart and Jason did Burton SC proud with a well deserved 2nd place and overnight leaders Russ and Andy Short banged in a less than shabby 3rd. This race proving that there was all to sail for in day 2 and that anyone could have this championship in the bag!
A weary group of 505ers then headed for a club house to evaluate the days glories and mishaps. A re-fuelling curry was served with plenty of beer and rum (thanks to Charlie’s literary prowess) and crashed out, all in preparation for day two.

Race 4 started in a not so dissimilar breeze to that of race 3 on the previous day, much to the joys of the heavier teams. This time, however, it was Jim Hunt and Norman Byrd that managed to get their nose out front and led for the whole race. Charlie and Dougal came in 2nd and the Shorts close behind to grab 3rd.

Race 5 saw the wind swing north, much to the annoyance of the race officer! The first start was recalled due to the “gentle encouragement” of certain teams over the line, therefore PRO Bill Hooton took the no-nonsense approach and the black flag came out the bag. One underway it was quick to see that Russ and Andy were going to have this one wrapped up as they darted out into the lead. However, they were constantly dogged by Jim and Norman and Charlie and Dougal all around the race-course but held firm till the end to cement another win.

Race 6 being the last race of the Burton Open was the Ross Kenney memorial trophy, the fourth time it has been sailed since his passing in 2008. A Shift up the first beat gave Jim/ Norman and Neil/Adam a boost and managed to round 1st and 2nd around the windward mark with a small lead. (The old man giving us some luck I’m sure!) Stuart/Jason and Tim Rush/ Rich Nurse fought it out in 3rd and 4th trying to make the ground back on the boats in 1st and 2nd unfortunately to no avail. Despite trying every trick in the book Neil/Adam were unable to snatch 1st place from Jim/Norman who sailed very well and kept them at bay all the way round, so therefore the winners of the Ross Kenney memorial trophy 2012 was Jim Hunt and Norman Byrd with Neil/Adam 2nd and Stuart/ Jason 3rd.

Another great Inlands at Burton; hope to see more of you next year!
Submitted by TonyM - report by Adam Kenney

Shotley S.C. 505 Open 2011

Walters and Cram beat the locals at Shotley

Shotley 505 Open 30/31 July 2011

It was the return of “The BIG ONE”, unfortunately the wind hadn’t and we were left with a light West North Westerly. Although it wasn’t the usual high-speed sailing that we are used to, it was very exciting in terms of the racing.

Race 1 was won by Matt and Daniel Hart, followed by Terry Selfe / Alan Montague and Martin Hodgson/Adrian Miles in third.

Race 2 saw some of the usual contenders moving up the fleet with Charlie Walters / Dougal Cram coming in first, closely followed by the Hart’s and last years winners Terry Scutcher / Christian Diebitsch coming in third.

Race 3 saw the wind drop even further and at times it was a bit of a drifter. Again the racing was very close but as usual in the lighter breeze Charlie & Dougal led around the final windward mark followed by the Hart’s, Martin & Adrian and Terry & Christian, unfortunately the Hart’s went right and lost 2 places by the final leeward mark, however for a moment it would appear that they may be able to get third when Terry fell out of the back of the boat, fortunately he was able to grab hold of the transom and pull himself back in, not bad for someone his age. Again Charlie & Dougal came in first, followed by Martin & Adrian in second and Terry & Christian. The race back to shore was won comfortably by “The Pride of East Anglia” thanks to a tow from Terry’s very fast RIB but at least this time he didn’t receive a lecture from the local coastguard.

The club put on a great BBQ and a good night was had by all and thanks must go to all the ladies and gents for all their hard work.

Sunday morning we were greeted with a great breakfast and beautiful sunny skies, unfortunately no wind, our race officer Doug postponed the start for 45 minutes and his wisdom proved right, the wind slowly filling in from a South Easterly direction. As we passed Felixstowe Docks and entered the wonderful Dovercourt Bay the wind picked up nicely and the previous days flat waters were gone leaving a nice chop.

Race 4 got underway in fantastic conditions with winds between 13-16 knots. Again racing was close and at the windward mark there were 6 boats closely fighting for top spot. Unfortunately gear failure put Christian Diebitsch in the water and the end to their race. Throughout the fleet there were battles, going this way and that, Greg Brown with his crew Ella Nicholson who had only sailed a 505 on a couple of occasions were doing a fantastic job and battling against their fellow Southwold boat of Felden & Symes. The battle for first place went to Martin & Adrian, followed by Charlie & Dougal and the Hart’s.

Race 5 started with slightly more wind and anyone of Charlie/Dougal, The Hart’s and Martin & Adrian able to win the most sort after title of the year. Again the fleet broke up into 3 groups each fighting to gain an advantage. Unfortunately Terry & Christian had gear failure again forcing them to retire but I’m sure they’ll be back next year with the aim of regaining their title. The top three were amongst the leaders at the windward mark and it was obvious that none of them were going to give up without a fight. On the final lap at the windward mark it was neck and neck between Charlie & Dougal and The Hart’s. The Hart’s raised their kite first and off they went, unfortunately an issue with the kite allowed Charlie & Dougal back in. However the Hart’s with their fantastic twin poles gybed quickly and reached the leeward mark just in the lead, it was now a straight race for the line. The Hart’s tacked giving Charlie and Dougal a chance which they took with both hands to win another race, very closely followed by the Hart’s and Martin & Adrian.

Congratulations to Charlie and Dougal for winning the most prestigious title of them all. Congratulations must also go to the entire fleet for some fantastic close racing, we must also thank and congratulate Doug Brown our Race Officer for setting great courses allowing the fleet to have a great weekend of racing. With thanks also to the committee boat crew and our rescue teams.

Back on shore we would like to thank Shotley Sailing Club again for laying on such a good spread in the evening/morning and being such great hosts, can’t wait till next year.

Shotley S.C. 505 Open 2011

Position

Boat

Race 1

Race 2

Race 3

Race 4

Race 5

Points

Discard

Final Points

1

Walters/D Cram

4

1

1

2

1

9

4

5

2

M Hart/ D Hart

1

2

4

3

2

12

4

8

3

Hodgson/Miles

3

4

2

1

3

13

4

9

4

Selfe/Montague

2

5

7

7

7

28

7

21

5

Williams/Davis

8

6

5

6

5

30

8

22

6

Scutcher/Diebitsch

6

3

3

RTD

RTD

34

11

23

7

Deane/Turner

7

7

6

4

6

30

7

23

8

H Briddon/S Briddon

6

RTD

DNS

5

4

37

11

26

9

Felden/Symes

10

9

8

8

8

43

10

33

10

G Brown/E Nicholson

9

8

9

9

9

44

9

35

Gorge brothers win from Boite/Toupet and Pinnell/Mitchell

Andy Smith reports:

15 Boats descended on Stone SC on 14/15 May. A cool brisk breeze and blue skies greeted the fleet for some champagne sailing on the Blackwater estuary.

Terry & Christian smoked up the first beat In Race 1 to lead at the windward mark, sailing Terry’s old Kyrwood “The Pride of Essex”. They were followed by Matt & Daniel Hart and Charlie & Dougal. At the gybe mark Matt & Daniel had a 'moment', resulting in a capsize in the shallow water and a bent mast that resulted in a great deal of boat work to get them back on the water for Sunday. “The Pride of Essex” let Terry & Christian down with a broken trapeze handle at the leeward mark, letting Andy & Tim into the lead, but Charlie & Dougal were in hot pursuit. The battle was settled when Andy & Tim's spinnaker pole came uncleated on the penultimate reach proving that it’s not all plain sailing with twin poles! The win went to Charlie & Dougal with Martin & Adrian sailing through to take second.

Race 2 was contested with the same players as Race 1, however this time Andy & Tim took line honours from Terry & Christian with Martin & Adrian third. Roger & Dave were first out into the pressure on the right and led around the first lap of Race 3. Andy & Tim took the lead on the second beat, which they maintained to the end. The breeze picked up through the race to a point that two-sail reaching was required at times. Terry & Christian pulled into second from Martin & Adrian and Roger & Dave.

On Saturday evening the club hosted all the sailors with a fantastic BBQ and inter-fleet bar games with the Hornets and FD’s which rounded off the evening nicely.

The breeze was a little lighter at the start of sailing on Sunday. There were some snakes and ladders during Race 4 with big holes and shifting breeze. Charlie and Martin making ground and Andy gaining it back throughout the race. On the final run Martin and Charlie split and headed for opposite corners. Martin emerged to take second from Charlie. With the tide ebbing hard the fleet headed left out of the start for Race 5. Matt & Daniel were back with an old Proctor D that they had managed to rig overnight. Their hard work proved fruitful as they rounded in the top five. Terry & Christian led and held Andy & Tim off down the first triangle until their other trapeze handle let go at the leeward mark! Martin and Charlie took advantage of their misfortune.

Andy & Tim led Race 6 from the start until the final beat where Martin, who had sailed consistently throughout the weekend with a string of second places upped the anti and stormed into the lead, closely followed by Terry. Andy just managed to hold onto second at the windward mark. Martin & Adrian sailed a perfect downwind leg to take a well earned victory to close out the weekend's racing.

Other notable performances were Stuart & Jason with a string of 4th places; Roger & Dave demonstrated good speed, leading races and ultimately finishing just behind Stuart & Jason. Neil & Adam sailing 8306, in addition to Terry & Christian, also showed how an older boat can perform over a variety of conditions.

Thanks go to Stone, who hosted a superb weekend's sailing with excellent race management and a great time off the water.

(6 races, 5 to count)

1 9012 Andy Smith & Tim Needham Notts County/Staunton 3 1 1 1 1 2
2 8963 Martin Hidgson & Adrian Miles Stone SC 2 2 3 2 2 1

3 8835 Charlie Walters & Dougal Cram Datchet SC 1 3 5 3 3 5

4 9006 Terry Scutcher & Christian Diebitsch Shotley SC dnf 4 2 7 4 3

5 8905 Stuart Turnbull & Jason Lunn Burton SC 4 5 6 4 6 4

6 8881 Roger Deane & Davd Turner Rock/

However, none of the guys seemed keen to rig their boats due to a serious lack of wind. We all made the decision, which if by 15-00 hours the breeze hadn’t filled in evenly over the race course, and then the race officer would abandon. This meant hanging around all day! 3 o’clock came and the N flag was raised, meaning no more racing today.

However, the wind filled in half an hour after this! So Andy Smith and Tim Needham went to show off their new twin spinnaker poles!

On the Sunday the wind forecast showed about 5 knots. This didn’t show but the first race got underway and as usual Andy Smith and Tim got off to a good start, tacking out right on the shifts with the Briddon team and Tim Rush /Andy Short close behind.

Down the first run, it was whoever could get into the most breeze. Up the second windward leg Tim Rush and Andy sailed onto the left hand side, picking up a big Left hand shift which won them the race closely followed by Smithy and the Briddon’s.

Race two got under way and the start line was massively port end bias. The Briddon team tacked onto Port and sailed into the lead with Bobbie Johnson and Tony Merry in 2nd. The wind shifted even more to the left hand side which meant it was a reach to the windward mark and back down to the leeward mark. Team Briddon won the race closely followed by Andy Smith and Tim Needham with Bobbie and Tony finishing a very respectable 3rd place.

A big Thanks goes to the Scottish boys for making the journey south and its great to see some of the not so ‘Hot shots’ creeping up towards the front of the fleet. Hope to see you all at Stone SC in a few weeks time!

Harry Briddon GBR 8906

<colgroup><col style="width: 29pt;" width="38"></col> <col style="width: 48pt;" width="64"></col> <col style="width: 146pt;" width="195"></col> <col style="width: 68pt;" width="91"></col> <col style="width: 23pt;" span="2" width="30"></col> <col style="width: 35pt;" width="47"></col> </colgroup>

R1

R2

Total

1

8906

Harry Briddon/Simon Briddon

Ogston

3

1

4

2

9012

Andy Smith/Tim Needham

Notts County

2

2

4

3

8935

Tim Rush/Andrew Short

Carsington

1

5

6

901

Jez White/Matt Isherwood

Draycote

4

4

8

5

8834

Jim Blyth/Danny Read

Largo Bay

5

6

11

6

8860

Bobbie Johnson/Tony Merry

Burton

9

3

12

7

8432

Alistair Colvin/Alan Moss

Loch Lomond

6

7

13

8

8905

Stuart Turnbull/Jason Lunn

Burton

7

9

16

9

8780

Martin Wright/Rob Burdekin

Burton

8

8

16

10

8474

Chris Thorne/Mike Priddle

Portishead

10

10

20

Footnotes:

From Tony Merry:

By far the best sail of the weekend was between 4 and 5pm on the Saturday when Jim/Danny, Andy/Tim and Bobbie/Tony enjoyed some excellent 3 sail reaching. There would have been a 4th boat (Alistair/Alan from Loch Lomond) but unfortunately the water was closed just as they were about to launch!

Our best result (race 2 - 3rd) should have been even better! We managed to keep Andy/Tim out until the last leg of the race when we sailed into a hole whilst they found a nice stream of wind!

Special mention should be made of Jez and Matt in achieving two 4th place results (and they were not the lightest of crews either!).

Oh! I nearly forgot - the twin poles - it was good to see Andy and Tim working away on their new pole set up in the dinghy park. Some good discussions and demonstrations on how it all works followed by a very impressive on water trial. Their first gybe seemed to be completed in about 4 seconds - about the time it normally takes me to find the guy ready to attach it to the pole! I want one (and so does Jim Blyth)!

From Jason Lunn:

On Sunday we were expecting more wind but it was very light again, but just enough to tempt us out onto the water. As an example of the frustrations, on the second race we were going upwind and it was so fickle, that every boat overtook us from windward and leeward, with us completely stationary. I would say more torture than fun, but that’s sailing!!

NEXT MEETING: Stone SC on the East Coast [14-15 May]

Last year we enjoyed an excellent event - hopefully there will be a good turnout again this year and, if you missed it, another chance to see the Smithy and Tim twin pole set-up again.

As a reminder of last year here is the 2010 news report.

7 names on the list already - why not add your and join in the fun - all welcome!

Burton Open Results

Gorge brothers win from Boite/Toupet and Pinnell/Mitchell

Burton Open Report by Tim Needham

The weekend of the 9th and 10th of April saw 17 505s attend the Burton Open Meeting. The weather was glorious and the forecast breeze was more than adequate to get in some competitive racing. Scheduled for the Saturday was a 2 hour Coached training session with Tim Rush, followed by 2 races in the afternoon; with another 3 races organised for the Sunday.

The training session began at mid-day in a nice 8-12knots of breeze. The 505s did windward/leeward courses whilst receiving one-to-one coaching from Tim Rush. This was a good opportunity to improve boat handling skills and sail setting, plus blow off the winter cobwebs. As a fleet we extend great thanks to Tim Rush for his coaching over the weekend, and for his knowledgeable de-briefs following each sailing session.

Race 1 began in a slightly depleted 8 knots. With the usual suspects Charlie/Dougal, the Briddons and the Shorts shooting off up the course having had great starts, Smith/Needham were left buried. Half way through the race it became apparent that 2 boats had sailed the wrong course, leaving the well-earned bullet going to Harry and Simon Briddon. In second was Tim Bird and Arthur George and a very well earned third place went to Bobby Johnson and Tony Merry.

Race 2 saw the breeze in a similar direction and wind strength. The first beat was close meaning that the top 6 were tightly packed around the windward mark, with the exception Of Russ and Andy Short who had a small lead over the pack. By the end of the run Smith Needham had caught the leading boat and a fight began for first place. This tight contest lasted the entire race until team Briddon caught the leaders and began attacking. At the windward mark for the final time the race was anybody’s, however by the end of the run the Shorts lead by just a boat length over Smith/Needham. With a small beat to the line Smith Needham just clinched the victory over the Short brothers. Team Briddon finished third. A well sailed race by all.

Sunday saw a some-what less enthusiastic 505 fleet possibly as a result of Adam Kenney's 21st Birthday or Carl Gibbon's Wedding. However Race 3 was held in a constant-ish 5 knots with a full fleet of 17 taking part. The first beat again was close with the top 5 all rounding together, the same followed down the run. However Smith/Needham took the lead with a handy shift from the left up the second beat, allowing them to take the lead, where they remained for the rest of the race. Tim Bird and slightly different looking Arthur George finished Second with Russ and Andy Short in 3rd.

Race 4 was attempted in an ever dying 3 knots. Most of the fleet started the race. However once the boats began reaching the beat and beating the run it became apparent that racing was out of the question. With the relief of most of the fleet the race officer abandoned the race and the scheduled 5th race.

This left the over-all top 5 as - 1st Smith/Needham, 2nd Team Briddon, 3rd Bird/George, 4th Team Short, 5th Johnson/Merry. Prizes were awarded to the top three, also Smith/Needham got to lift the Ross Kenney Memorial trophy as the winner of the last race sailed.

Huge thanks to everyone involved in organising the event, especially Tim Rush for his time and knowledge over the course of the weekend.

Sailed: 3, Discards: 1, To count: 2, Entries: 17, Scoring system: Appendix A

<colgroup span="10"> <col class="rank"></col> <col class="sailno"></col> <col class="club"></col> <col class="helmname"></col> <col class="crewname"></col> <col class="race"></col> <col class="race"></col> <col class="race"></col> <col class="total"></col> <col class="nett"></col> </colgroup>

Rank

SailNo

Club

HelmName

CrewName

R1

R2

R3

Total

Nett

1st

9012

NCSC

Andy Smith

Tim Needham

(5.0)

1.0

1.0

7.0

2.0

2nd

8906

Ogston SC

Harry Bridden

Simon Bridden

1.0

3.0

(7.0)

11.0

4.0

3rd

9039

Burton SC

Tim Bird

Arthur George

2.0

(8.0)

2.0

12.0

4.0

4th

8935

Carsington

Russ Short

Andre Short

(4.0)

2.0

3.0

9.0

5.0

5th

8860

Burton SC

Bobbie Johnson

Tony Merry

3.0

5.0

(8.0)

16.0

8.0

6th

8835

Datchet

Charlie Walters

Dougal Cram

(18.0 DSQ)

4.0

5.0

27.0

9.0

7th

8685

Carsington

Richard Sims

Simon Wood

6.0

(7.0)

4.0

17.0

10.0

8th

8905

Burton SC

Stuart Turnbull

Jason Lunn

(18.0 DSQ)

6.0

6.0

30.0

12.0

9th

8749

Helensburgh SC

Alastair Milton

Charles Milton

7.0

9.0

(12.0)

28.0

16.0

10th

8583

TaTa SC

Patrick Moore

Paul Bambridge

8.0

10.0

(13.0)

31.0

18.0

11th

8780

Burton SC

M Wright

S Preston

9.0

(11.0)

11.0

31.0

20.0

12th

8526

Tewkesbury

Russ Hopkins

Olly Hopkins

11.0

(13.0)

10.0

34.0

21.0

13th

901

Draycote

Jez White

Matt Isherwood

10.0

12.0

(15.0)

37.0

22.0

14th

8457

GMSC

John Wilson

Adrian Howe

12.0

14.0

(16.0)

42.0

26.0

15th

8974

Burton SC

Ian Merryfield

Dennis Cartwirght

(18.0 DNC)

18.0 DNC

9.0

45.0

27.0

16th

6163

Datchet

Ian Garrard

Remco Van den Heuvel

13.0

15.0

(17.0)

45.0

28.0

17th

8306

Burton SC

Neil Rabbits

Adam Kenney

(18.0 DNC)

18.0 DNC

14.0

50.0

32.0
